Digital organization of student info

Do you keep a video and/or audio portfolio for your students? Thoughts on how to organize one? Storage is becoming an issue for me. I use Dropbox. I store all my files on this. Video, audio, and paper. As it's cloud storage, you can access it from any device. I have set up folders for each student. Google cloud. Once exception is my student enrollment forms…

Keeping track of prospective students

What sort of system do you use for tracking your contact with prospective students? I've been playing around with some free CRM (customer relationship management), but it's incredibly confusing for someone like me who has no prior experience with something like this. I'd like to get more organized, but I'm not sure how to do it. At this point, everything is just in emails and it's getting to be a pain to go back and scan…

Which SHMs should students bring to lessons?

I am looking for ideas on how your students organize their printed SHMs and what you ask them to bring to the lesson. When I started teaching in SMD, I had each student bring in a binder with dividers to create sections for each level/program. Many of their binders are full now and I need to give them some direction. I've recently introduced Level 3, the Read 'n Play workbook, Accompaniment Variations, Tune Toolkit, and Songs…

Teacher lesson notes

I am a quite new teacher, with three students who have just finished Foundation 1 and a few others still working in F1. I'm trying to include Comp & Improv, Arrangements, and Accompaniment. How do I remember what to do in each lesson or class? Do you make a list? I'm using the Private Lesson Record and Shared Lesson Record, but it doesn't have space for all I want to write. Please share what has worked…

Hard copy materials vs digital

I'm interested in hearing how everyone is dealing with the digital materials in class. My hard copy books are falling apart, and I'm debating on going the pricey route of buying an iPad Pro for the piano or printing out all the materials. For those of you who print, what have you found that works well for organizing? It's going to take a lot of ink and binders/portfolios to print all those books! If you are…

Screen vs. Whiteboard for Lesson Notes?

Greetings all – thinking about the time I spend writing weekly lessons on whiteboards, and also documenting lesson content on my computer files – wondering if anybody has transitioned to use something other than a whiteboard for lesson content/notes? I am thinking it would be great to be able to effortlessly use my softcopy file (which has columns for Foundation and all the streams I use – similar to the prototype that Laurie has shared) and…

Invoicing software – which is the best?

Hi all, I’d appreciate the perspectives of others on the topic of finding a reliable app/software package for tracking music lessons and creating invoices. I was using Music Teachers’ Helper but became disappointed by the fact that their invoicing system became very ‘confused’ by any alterations I made to the existing calendar (such as splitting a class into two). I’d like to find one that has enough smarts to figure out what I’m asking it to do.…

Apps for organizing digital TTMs

I use an app on my iPad that is called “Documents” and is by Readdle. I know there are likely plenty of other good organizational apps out there, but here’s why I like this one. 1. It has a documents section (for storage) and a browser built in as well, for easy downloading. 2. I can set up file folders for Simply Music programs, then use the browser to access the SM TTMs, and download the…

Master List of Projects

I’m finding I’m sporadic in assigning projects in all the streams, and in an effort to be more consistent I am trying to plan differently. For my lesson plans/tracking I’m going to use the columns idea someone shared recently with Date, Foundation, Accompaniment, Improv and Composition, and eventually Jazz across the top. And then listing the plan for each lesson divided this way. Anything we don’t get to in the lesson, I’m just mark an arrow to…

Web based Enrollment and Payments‏

I am wondering if anyone can recommend a web program that teachers can use to have people book into lessons, and also accept payments. I am particularly interested in this type of facility for my babies - school age music groups that I run. Perhaps it might also be handy for Simply Music? I'm using a trial version of music teachers helper, which is free for five students. I am also…
