Parents not wanting to “force” a child into lessons

"I'm a free-thinking parent, I'm not going to force them to do anything they don't want to do." When someone says this, do you even attempt to take the student, or do you pass altogether? I have had some wonderful families with this mentality honestly. It's a different one but you just never know with families. I had one that said they would try it out. Their daughter was 4 and…

Summer Teaching in Students’ Home

I was approached by a parent of 2 students that would like me to consider teaching at her home in the summer. She said that her sub has many children that may have interest in piano lessons and she'd round them up for a FIS and then help me start them in large shared lessons. What are your thoughts as teachers? Is this giving up territory by not teaching in my home? Would this be a good…

Scheduling Groups

I know from my experience as a traditional piano teacher that (at least for me) scheduling more than 3 or max 4 hours of lessons straight with no major break is very draining (physically & mentally). I do much better with a 1/2 hour break every 3 hours or so. Would scheduling with groups be similar? I understand from Neil's video that groups take more energy on many levels. Would scheduling only 2 groups back to…

Managing Teaching and Homeschooling

I am curious as to how those of you who home school and teach SM coordinate your teaching schedules. We have four children whom we home school and I have a moderate-sized studio and am struggling to maintain a healthy balance between my two responsibilities. Any ideas, comments or encouragement? I have been homeschooling for 11 years now and have been teaching Simply Music for 4 years. Both jobs are…

Homeschool Siblings acting as Coaches‏

I have a homeschool family that I taught traditionally up until January of this year, when they went on a sabbatical. They are coming home soon, and when I talked with the mom about piano and told her I was now teaching SM, she asked about her oldest son (11 years old, has taken many years of piano and is a very responsible kid) being the coach for her 6/7 year old daughter that she is…

Homeschool Student Evaluations

I have a homeschool student who's mother has asked me to evaluate/grade her on her progress to be turned in as credit. I have not encountered this so far, and wondered if anyone has created an evaluation form or anything to assist in the grading process. My student didn't have anything to supply me with and simply said that I should write up something for her to turn in. But, I just wondered if anyone (especially…

Marketing to Homeschoolers

Question to all of you.... anyone having success tapping into the home-school population? I have searched online for organizations, and the few that I found did not respond to my request to advertise. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. I belong to a preschool mother's group in my community. There is a monthly newsletter in which I can advertise for FREE as long as I'm a member. Non-members can still advertise, but there is a…

Marketing in The Homeschool Community

Last year I was asked to speak at a Christian homeschool convention in Northern California for this April. There will be approximately 1000 attendees. Somehow they got a hold of my name because of the reputation/referral of my studio. They told me I couldn't specifically talk about a product or certain curriculum but to come up with a subject matter that would be appropriate to present. So my topic of choice is: Creating a Musical World…

Homeschool Workshops

Teaching Simply Music and have shared with a local home school activities group, so that they might consider Simply Music piano as one of their activities next term. The mother of one of my students has recommended me and the Simply Music program. One of the issues that is likely to arise, should I be invited to come teach, is that they only meet every twoweeks. There is only 11 weeks next term (usually 10), which…

Advertising to Homeschoolers

I am a new teacher just starting out, and I would really love to be able to advertise to the home school network in my area, but not sure where to start. Has anyone had any experience or ideas with this? I'm a homeschool mom and I have 11 homeschool students. In my opinion, the best way to advertise to homeschoolers is through a homeschool support group or by placing fliers…
