Note Disk Alternatives

RR (Reading Rhythm) question: Any suggestions for alternatives to the paper notes disc? Although I am not entirely opposed to arts and crafts, I have seen a number of teaching tools similar to this for gen ed teachers working with fractions (Fraction Circle Manipulatives), but they look much more professional and are magnetized for use on the white board. I only hesitate to purchase those because they typically only include pieces going up to 1/12 (no sixteenths!). Also, are there digital possibilities that anyone has tried successfully?

I made them out of felt. Different colours for the different fractions.

How about printing several on different colors (for each size) of card stock, cut and laminate, and put small magnets on the backs. A little bit of work, but inexpensive.

I printed 5 disks and attached them to black paper, covered by sheet protectors. Each page represents the next “halving” demo , so cut according to each level — one page for whole, one page for halves, one page for quarters, etc.. I bound the sheet protectors so it’s a little booklet – which is very handy to pullout as needed for a quick review.

Leeanne Innes I think the physical act of doing this is really important for the student. They should cut up a set in class that they take home with them and the teacher should have a set that they use in ongoing lessons in class.
