Question about Foundation Levels building on each other

I’m getting ready to have four students go into Level 4. I have that program but haven’t purchased 5 & 6. Will these levels build upon the lower like Levels 1, 2, 3 did?
Robin Keehn, Washington
No. Levels 1-3 build upon each other but Level 4 introduces new pieces and the concept of Fragmenting. Level 4 is new materials. There are some pieces that are introduced in Levels 5-9 that are further developed (they are introduced and then developed). One piece that does appear in Levels 1, 2, 5, 7, and 9 is Fur Elise.

Squidgies Boogie in Level 4 is expanded in Level 6.

Neil roughly groups the Foundation levels into threes. Levels 1-3 focus on base tools. 4-6 focus on fragmenting, 7-9 on mapping. So 5 & 6 do build on what’s introduced in 4. This, as I say, is just a general rule. Really, fragmenting is first experienced in pieces like Greensleeves, but it’s more formally introduced in F4 pieces like Lullaby. Whether or not certain pieces are developed in stages through these levels, they are just further opportunities to explore the key concept of fragmenting.
Fragmenting is exciting because it creates the opportunity to explore more sophisticated pieces which are a little less pattern-based (of course, we will still have lots of opportunities to use our base tools). That also means that for some students, some of these levels will take longer to complete than 1, 2, or 3. That’s perfectly normal, and a great opportunity to continue the long-term relationship conversation.
