Since my email last night regarding the “Swim Coach” reference to teaching students who play better than you do, I’ve had a couple of emails asking about what exactly “Self-Generating” or “generative” teaching or learning is. What it means, in a nutshell, is the ability…

Longer Pieces in Recitals
I’d like for students to have some longer pieces for the recital. Any thoughts on doing this? I could have students do some variations/arrangements together into one piece or perhaps have them make up their own variations for arrangements to add. Any thoughts on how…

Jackson Arrangement 3 Fingering
In teaching Humpty’s Twins (Jackson Blues arrangement 3), I generally teach RH3 for the middle note of all the chords. I had a student today ask why not RH4 for the middle note of the top chord. Thoughts? I teach the same way, and just…

Teach a very small portion of something without revealing what it’s leading to. This works great with Arrangements, e.g. Soapy Dreams (Dreams #2): I teach just the LH chord shape and ask students to try it in different locations on the piano. Once everyone’s got…
