Do you charge differently for group versus private instruction? If so, which is more and by what percent?
Leeanne I., Australia
I charge more for private lessons. $40 extra per month. Two reasons: they are using up my studio time where I could be teaching more students and making more money by going private. Secondly, I want to encourage as many students as possible to go into shared lessons.

I make it virtually unaffordable for private lessons – $120 more to be honest. I tell beginners all the benefits of group lessons and they why I keep my lessons on the higher side…for special needs and extra gifted. Then they get it and I’m able to consolidate my classes.
Missy M., Iowa
I charge $40 more per month for individual lessons. It surprised me how many people want private lessons anyway. I take very few private students and for very few reasons.
Joanne D., Australia
I charge $38 private and $28 shared each lesson.
Nicole O., California
I charge $110 more a month for private lessons. I want to teach mostly groups and allow for private lessons only in special circumstances.
Ian B., California
My group lessons are $20 vs $30 private. However, I standardize 30-minute lessons and charge more for 45 and 60 minutes, whereas group charges don’t change. I also don’t charge by the lesson so it really ends up being $87/month for groups and anywhere from $130-$238/month for private.

I don’t even offer private lessons unless there are extenuating circumstances, and provided I have a time slot I’m willing to use. Then I offer my regular group rate of $95/month but for 2 lessons a month. Or $160/month for weekly. But nobody ever does that.
Carrie L., Michigan
$100 per month for shared and $155 for private.
