Inner Hearing Exercise

I was remembering something I used to do with my elem general music students in school. They would sing a song and when I held up my hand, they kept singing it internally. When my hand came down, they would continue singing where the song NOW was in their head. It develps ‘inner hearing’. I was thinking that might be cool to do with my piano students too! Tap their shoulder and they stop playing but keep the piece going in their head. Tap them again and they pick it up where the piece NOW is. I’ll let you know how it goes! Fun to try new things.

One thing I really like about that idea is that many of us already will tell our students that it’s good to be able to play a piece from the middle without always having to start at the beginning. What you just shared seems a great incremental step to practicing that other ability — they are in effect getting practice starting from the middle but without it having to be jumping directly in.
