Apology from Special Needs Student

I want to send out a note of encouragement to everyone in our Simply Music family…
This morning I had a really challenging exchange with a student that I teach 1:1 with Asperger’s. He often wants to claim territory (as does his younger sister who does not have this condition and is in a shared class) and although I certainly make adjustments for him, today I was crystal clear about how the class would run. I always offer choices and remind him “Hey, you get to choose and you have all the power here.” This family has been with me for a long time so I am really comfortable with when and how much to allow.
He stormed out of my studio and had the worst meltdown I have ever seen him have…I remained calm and did not at all go after him. I had a talk with mom and when she asked if I could “just do this, etc.” I said calmly, “No, that’s not how it’s going to work in my studio.” The mom in me was screaming to give in but the coach in me stood firm. OK, well, I can be a tough mom too and as you can see from the note below, my young man (8th grade) processed what had happened and sent this note.
So, in those moments when you just want to “give in” listen to your heart, head and gut. Both the parent and student will thank you and with each challenge you’ll continue to grow as a teacher…I sure did this morning and this was the first class with a marathon day to follow
Ms. Karina,
I am sorry for my behavior early today. I promise I’ll try to be better next week. Sorry about bumming you out this morning as well.
Sincerely,
Jack S.
