Grading Students

Please help ๐ I’ve been asked by two of my students to give them a grade for music (piano)? Is anyone able to advise me on the criteria for this? I keep finding myself wanting to draw from my traditionally trained brain but I don’t feel that this approach would be fair. TIA ๐ถ

I believe grades are not a part of the Simply Music Piano ethos. I certainly donโt use them. I would discuss with them the myriad of other ways the SMP approach will allow them to assess their progress.

I’m totally not wanting to give grades but they need something for their credits apparently…..my thinking is in the area of regular practice, keeping up with the Playlist, lesson preparation and technical progress. That way I’m not grading particular pieces but rather their growth and development as they move through the program. Would love to know any other thoughts. Thanks

Ask them to grade themselves, then earn the grade.

Include comp and improv…their generative development

If they show up, try their best, and put in the 5 days of practice for at least 15 minutes each time I give an A.

You might point them to this Formula for Success and encourage them to use it to score themselves:ย https://simplymusic.com/the-formula-for-success/
