I have tried improvising on black notes with ‘Life Song’ from the Time for More Music program with terrific results. I have tried these options:

1. Lower part played on the keyboard, Upper part sung (or played on another instrument) and then improvising on the upper end of the keyboard
2. Lower part played on the keyboard, Upper part played on the keyboard and improvising on another keyboard in the room
3. Lower part played on the keyboard, no presence of the melody and then improvising on the upper end of the keyboard

It has been a useful tool in the shared lesson environment not only with students in Time for More Music but also providing another opportunity for improvisation for beginning students as well.
