It’s hard to say, but typically I introduce it in Level 4. That being said, there have been times that I wait as long as possible–even into Level 7. I’ve done that when I have strong readers (typically adults) who benefit from having a lot of playing-based tools and staying in the playing-based environment as long as possible. I have felt that once we started reading, they would slip into old habits and try to read rather than stick with the playing-based tools. It has worked well–by the time we read, they are very attached to the playing-based approach and we’ve established so much trust that they’ll follow the Reading Program happily (not reverting back to the way they used to read).
