By the end of Level 1 I’m having students work through “how to play” songs they know pretty well. We discuss telling the story of each song with expression.

I think it is a conversation you can start having in context from the very beginning–like Neil encourages letting folks use the pedal. Then you are learning as you go! I start telling my students what some of the dynamics mean (legato/walking, for instance) and then say, “Now you’re learning Italian at piano lessons! Two cool things for the price of one. What a deal!” We laugh and usually they remember and start adding them up and the conversation continues!
