Keeping track of prospective students

What sort of system do you use for tracking your contact with prospective students? I’ve been playing around with some free CRM (customer relationship management), but it’s incredibly confusing for someone like me who has no prior experience with something like this. I’d like to get more organized, but I’m not sure how to do it. At this point, everything is just in emails and it’s getting to be a pain to go back and scan through them.

I have a form I created with contact information. Age of student, prior experience, how much I shared on initial phone call, etc. I fill out the form on prospective students and have a notebook with hard copies of this initial contact. When I go to an FIS, I have these sheets with me for a quick refresher. I like paper sometimes. Rather, I like paper often because I tend to lose things and emails and computers.

I have a form similar to what Elaine just described. But I fill out my form on my computer, and I copy and paste pertinent info from email exchanges onto the form. Usually I only print it if I have an FIS with several participants.
