Mashing up blues songs

I did an activity with one of my teenage students today that was really great. I was encouraging him to use the different blues songs to get ideas, mash them up, etc. Then we jammed. I was on guitar and I gave him a few call-outs to change to Alma or Light Blue or add Light Blue bass, CAGE chords, etc, then I swapped with him and had him call them out! He loved it! All good and well until he said Squidgies bass with Light Blue RH. Hilarious!

I think that is great! I spend at least ten minutes of every lesson jamming too. One student on keyboard, another on piano, me on guitar, others and parents/siblings on rhythm instruments. It is important to me that students can play their pieces both solo and ensemble style.

For sure, and helps immensely with their timing when they have to play with others. Much nicer than a metronome!

And when they get an off-the-wall opportunity to play in a group of musicians, they already have some confidence built in!
