Student Home Materials For Multiple Family Members

If multiple family members are taking lessons, does each person need their own set of Student Home Materials, or can one set suffice? It would seem like duplication perhaps and unnecessary expense to have three sets of the same thing? Thanks for any thoughts from the voices of experience out there.

I have one set per family – although they may need more Notes Book/Playslist as they’ll go through those faster. Either one per child or have them share books, with a page /child, but then they go through them faster.

One large family (seven kids) that I have decided not only to have a Playlist book for each student, but they had to pay for them each themselves!! That placed a tad of ownership and responsibility on the student that made me smile at first and appreciate later. Those kiddos always knew where their playlist book was; they never “lost” them! They almost always remembered them and took more initiative sooner than most at learning to use them properly. It was a virtual study in amazement for me. I recommend it now–along with the great story and incentive it brings to parents!–to any family considering multiple children in lessons. I then sell the “savings” of using only one set of Student Home Materials (SHM) as a point in favor of lessons. It could be my imagination, but the same family took good care of their SHM’s and could always find them as well, no doubt from not wanting to be the one who lost any of them. They are playing well as a family now and even perform for different venues pretty frequently.
Yes, this kind of thing seems rare nowadays but it does open much conversation for possibilities for us and might even help some parents to see the many learning advantages of Simply Music.

It’s fine for family members to share SHM. But each student should have their own Playlist and if in different groups, their own Notes book

I have them share the reference book and video . But they do need to have their own Playlist and Note Book and their own Keypad! I charge those additional materials separately.

In our studio we do not give a sibling discount. Rather, we tell parents that the discount is that they only need one set of SHM for the whole family. We do require that each student has his or her own Notes Book and Playlist. Those are around $5.00 each and last for the whole year.
We also let siblings share the Accompaniment I book and other materials. Parents really appreciate this!

Like Robin, I don’t give family discounts. Many years ago at a traditional teachers conference the lecturer, in answer to this very question, said that we don’t give less time or less lesson value to siblings in their time slot so we should not give discounts. I thought this made a lot of sense so have been following that model ever since. I do, like Robin, let families share materials so they do save money there.
Parents understand this and when you think about it they are actually getting more for their $ as they go home with more folk in the house to remember all the details of the lesson.

When people ask if I give discounts I say no but that I love I giving $50 referral gifts to the referring families in the new family’s (one per family) third month of lessons. This is a win/win and while no one has ever taken me up on the following generous offer, I also offer free lessons for a year for 10 referrals within a year. They’re usually happy to know about my referral program. I have many families with multiple students paying full fees.
As far as purchasing multiple sets of materials, you might want to consider that the new Playlist and Notes Book is one book rather than two, so a little easier on the pocket-book when multiple family members are involved.
