When do we talk about the bottom number in the time signature? For example, 3/4 in Amazing Grace?

When you start talking about time signature in TFMM. You would say that 3/4 means “count to 3 using quarter notes.”

I bring it in when the student has a grasp of note divisions ie cutting out the circle in rhythm, so I’d talk about it in the first piece of music we look at, such as time for m music. I always say it’s how we count the beats in each bar (ie as quarters, eighths), or what the total rhythm values are for each bar.
