Bartering- Trading Lessons

I’d like to see some conversation on the issue of bartering lessons. Has it worked for you? How do you manage it successfully and do you recommend it? Do you “sign” agreements? Don’t hesitate to give me up-sides and down-sides. This is an issue I have grappled with when opportunities present themselves and I would sort of like to put it to rest in my mind.
However, in an effort to be prepared for any unique circumstance that might come up, I thought I would ask for some input. My own experience tells me that paying actual money keeps everyone more focused, helps folks to value what you are teaching them and is ‘taken more seriously’.

I’ve done it but only with people that I know. I’ve bartered for massages, website (my first one), professional organizing (helped me clean all my clutter fast!), and professional pictures of my children.
Most worked out very well! If you are VERY clear about what you expect to get and they are clear about what they expect to get it occurs to me that it will work well. I’ve only done this type of thing if I’ve known the person or trust them.

I’m with Carrie – I would only do this with people I know. Right now, I’m bartering for guitar lessons for two of my girls. Working out great.

I have bartered for many years. For years I got my hair colored and permed for lessons. Currently I am getting my apartment cleaned, which is something I’ve done before. In my case housework is very difficult, so it works out wonderfully. Once upon a time I bartered with a body shop to get my daughter’s car fixed. It is always something that I really need. Before we moved here I got a massage every month. In that case she paid half for lessons – which was a good deal for me. Just be sure it is something beneficial to you.

I barter with friends if they want to and we find something beneficial e.g. child minding, massage, art class. They always pay for the Student Home Material’s. I send them an email monthly with the tally so that we both know where we stand from month to month. It’s been really enjoyable so far, and we live in a small town where people are often trading skills in a barter arrangement.
