The best advertising I have found is FREE. I live in CA across the bridge from San Diego. I went to the local newspaper and placed a classified ad (which I pay for) that comes out weekly. While placing the ad, I found out just what kind of article they look for. In my town if it’s about students, seniors, military or pets, you have a good chance of getting your article in the paper.
This past year, I have had two articles in the paper, and both were FREE! In December I took my students to the local assisted living center to play, then submitted my article complete with photos. It came out the following week printed word for word. I make sure to include my phone number.
I continue to get calls from both newspaper articles and the classified ad which comes out weekly. The classified ad keeps me in the public eye and the free articles let them know what we are up to. Thanks to my local newspaper, my studio is almost completely full.

How about we roll out some free advertising ideas! This is a unique economy, SM is a breakthrough and supportive company.
Here’s mine! I’m pulling out the history books on this one, as it is a very old advertising technique, not used much anymore due to the fact that advertisers will not make any money, but you will. It is based on being personal and handwritten and can be tweaked to suit your comfort level with it.
Step 1: Take your business card, post it note, or the corner of some scratch paper or make it a letter.
Step 2: As if writing to a friend. Using your own handwriting. Write “Dear ——–“, here is that amazing piano teacher I was telling you about! List your phone #. Of course letter style would allow for some SM phrasing.
Step 3: When you’re at the doctor, dentist, getting tires, or even getting your nails done! Slip the card or note into a magazine or other place you feel it could be found and read.
Step 4: start receiving calls 😉
