Lullaby and Ode to Joy – simplified melody lines

Neil Moore, can you answer a question? Why do you leave off a melody note in Lullaby? A lot of my adults are adding it in because they (and me) have heard it that way. Seems like this could easily be added in at the end, just like the embellishment we add in. This question also pertains to Ode to Joy, which most people have heard differently as well (with quick notes and repeats). I know Ode is Level 1 and Lullaby is Level 4, though. Thanks!

Ode To Joy was basically customized to fit in with the type of learning strategy that we introduced. If I were to do it again I would actually use the original, more complete, melody line, and would present an even simpler strategy. Lullaby was just an adaptation to support a recurring pattern. I have no issue whatsoever with you and your students adding notes in.

I would like to know your other method – but I do enjoy middle to top – top to bottom – bottom to middle. I have never had an issue teaching that way. It is not hard to add the missing notes once a student is competent with what they have been taught.
