Optimal Group Size

I was wondering what you consider the optimal size for group lessons. Having lots of kids will probably require more time because they will all want to play their pieces, which is understandable. I find in my first group of little kids, I really have to rush myself and the kids through everything. Is this a matter of me being new at this?
I will start a group in January with a very shy little girl who is nervous around bigger boys. There is also another little girl and 2 older boys. It seems natural that I should start a group of 2 girls and a group of 2 boys. Of course time-wise, I’d like to do all four together. What do you think?

I try to teach only groups and am most comfortable with groups of four. Efficient enough to satisfy me and time enough for personal attention for students. I’d start your 4 together and divide into 2s only if you have to.

I am a big proponent of shared lessons. It’s better for everyone. To me, a prospective student’s discomfort with shared lessons isn’t a factor. They haven’t tried it yet! That’s how we grow – by entering unfamiliar territory and stepping outside our comfort zones.
As teachers, if we decide to offer only shared lessons, then that’s what should be communicated, unapologetically. If we feel like we have to meet students where they are comfortable, then we are forfeiting territory from the get-go.
