Applying playing-based strategies at a generative level

Here’s an idea for applying playing-based strategies at a generative level:
After a student composes a song, work together as a class to come up with a way to teach it. This might include making a diagram reference, talking about what specific playing-based tools can be used, and looking for patterns/shapes. Talk about how you would break it down into single-thought processes (typically challenging at first). Then invite them to teach it to someone.
You would need to discern whether or not the composition is conducive to this process and be able to determine some tools/strategies on your own in order to guide them when necessary. I have done this, and it’s pretty cool for the composer to see a composition validated in this way.

I have tried that, but getting students to make pattern-based compositions can be challenging. Worth the effort, though!

Yes, I would only consider it if a composition has definite patterns.
