I’m looking at what to suggest this Fall for my students who are playing with my Band in Spring concert. Some have their own ideas, which is best. For those who don’t– does anyone have ideas for current or somewhat current rock songs that feature piano that are appropriate for kids in Accomp 1?
I’ve had great fun teaching Great Balls of Fire using CAGE chords in RH and using LH similar to Family Tree. Really easy and the parents are loving hearing it.[question author=”I have introduced a song to many of my students that uses only the chords from Honey Dew called If I Die Young. There are several verse options and most of them are rather melodramatic but even the kids seem to realize that as it’s considered kind of country-rock song. The plus is that it is very melodic and rather haunting–lovely; but certainly doable/Acc 1. And the more skilled can easily dress it up. And apparently almost everyone in my Studio already knew it!

Adele’s “Stay” was very doable for one of my students this summer.

Capital City’s song, “Safe and Sound” also uses the Honey Dew chords. It’s fun and easy for students to recreate the melody to sound exactly like the song. Or, playing the chord progression in the RH with “She’ll be comin’ round the mountain” LH also sounds great!

Another good one is Everybody by Ingrid Michaelson. It also uses Honey Dew chords. It’s a catchy song and very easy to play.
