Lessons After Summer Camp

I received an inquiry from a Mom (referred by a mom of a current student) regarding lessons for her two sons, ages 6 and 8. She asked for evening times because the boys are in camp during the day. My experience with kids in camp during the summer is that they are tired and it’s a struggle to get them to practice. (because they are tired) Also they are in “play” mode more than learning mode. I also do not like working late every evening of the week. I have more daytime students and I am tired too. What has been your experience? Any wisdom to share? Thank you.
To clarify: I’m asking for your experience with kids in summer camp who come for class after camp. I’m not asking if I should take them or not.

If you don’t want to do it, then just say so 🤷♂️

When in doubt…don’t. One’s gut is normally pretty accurate. Perhaps consider starting them a week or two before school starts so that they’ve already got a rhythm going by then. Hopefully their camps are over by then.

One thing I appreciate about having my own business is setting whatever parameters work best for me and my family. For example, I decided several years ago I wanted to teach only adults and primarily during the morning. I have a full studio (full for me) of adults and only one has a lesson after 5 pm and most days I finish by1:00 pm. Set your vision and work towards that…🦜

If you really want these students, how about doing the free SIS now to get them excited, and saying you have availability to start them in an after-school slot when school starts?

My experience is that they are tired and less focused after summer camp.

Another option would be to have them in an early morning class, before they day’s summer camp activities start.

I’m already struggling with “pool fatigue” in my students in their afternoon/evening lessons – very tired and a bit moody after hours at the pool….I’m thinking about sending a group email to suggest limited pool time before lessons, but then again, it is summer, and they are kids 🤷🏻♀️

Keep lessons lighter with fun projects.
