Portions of Outside Pieces

Just curious if anyone ever hands your students a portion of a song as a reading project (rather than a whole piece). I’m wondering if it would be a good way to expose them to a song (and be able to hit different genres and styles easily) and then if they love it we can learn more or do the entire piece and if they don’t, we just finish the portion and move on to something else without feeling like we quit in the middle of a project.

After TFMM, I get my students choosing their own stuff right away — but even then I have them work a section at a time, and we will definitely set a song aside to switch to other things if a section takes a while to learn and if they’d prefer switching up rather than continuing with the same song for “too long” a time.
It’s definitely not quitting. No more than moving onto different projects after Alma Mater Blues 1st section or Fur Elise A is quitting.
