I am starting Reading Rhythm for the first time, and just want to make sure I understand how the TTM and Reference materials fit together. It appears that the Reference materials and MOR audios begin with Project 8 of the TTM. Is that correct? Do you typically assign a page per week for homework (taking 6 weeks to complete the project)? And how long does it typically take you to get through RR?
Stephen R., California
That’s correct. Projects 1-7 are before we start the book. I may take more time on the MOR 1’s initially while students develop comfort with the process (voicing and playing). Maybe hands alone first, then together. The quads are typically more challenging for students to play hands together, but I think it gets easier over time.
I work towards a page a week typically, in between writing/transcribing days. I take more time once we get to ties, dotted notes, and rests at the end.
I haven’t timed the whole Reading Rhythm process. Maybe six months or longer? I consistently do some reading work every week once we start.
Laurie Richards, Nebraska
The timing of the reading programs varies depending upon the students’ understanding as well as the teacher’s approach. Some take a while to digest the material (or they are not consistently practicing it at home). It’s one of those areas where you have to teach through it a few times to find your comfort level and figure out what works for students. Just make your way through each project thoroughly and make sure they’ve got it before moving on to the next project. Then keep going back and reviewing.
