Hi teachers, just curious how everyone is handling the Reading Rhythm process with online students. Are you having them play the tracks to the audio, a metronome, one handed while tapping the beat or having the coach clap? Any preference towards any of these? They’re all options, so wondering what students are preferring.

I am just having the coach voicing and clapping with the student. During the week with practice they use the audio tracks.

I’ve been having students use metronomes if they’re able to. Most keyboards have them built in, but wondering if you can adjust the volume separate from the keyboard volume. Doesn’t look like it on mine.

I have everyone put themselves on mute and voice and clap along with me. At the end of every exercise I say “thumbs up, thumbs sideways, thumbs down?” So I can quickly see students’ self-ratings. If I see anything other than all thumbs up, I repeat an exercise or slow down. I also bring them back off mute one by one to hear them do it on their own.
The thumbs up/down thing works well when I teach parts of songs, run the chord drill with them, lots… I do recommend.

I get them to play the tracks at home and practice then show me. I get a good indication of they are getting it right.

I have one in RR. I find that having her listen to me, then repeat examples works great; do only one measure at a time if it’s difficult. The student doing regular practice at home with the audio is a must. I have her mom text me pics of her transcription assignments.

Yes I second this. I’m finding that lots of call and response is great for online teaching.

Here’s another idea that works well in a shared online lesson:
Everyone takes turns clapping/voicing one line. They have to follow along each line so they know where to come in. I also have one person clap or play, and voice a line or two with metronome (or SHM audio), while the others do the same while muted
