Playlist Time in a Development Student Lesson – I have five students at these levels. By this time they are old hands at pruning, choosing what’s in, whats’ out, making sure they have their one hour of playing materiel etc.
My question is to what degree timewise and regularltywise do you check playlist at the beginning of the lesson as we do with FDN levels?

If you are religious with this.. what angles do you take that might be more ‘developed” say? For example would you say ‘Share a musical discovery moment from your PL this week ‘. I’m looking for more ideas for musical/generative depth in my approach. Thanks everyone.

could you include playing for others? You can ask them if they have. Eventually they may start doing it thinking it is their idea 😉 Just like Neil starts to ask students if they have started to compose when they have just started. Drop the seed. 😉

I still ask to hear something from the playlist most lessons. I might ask them to consider how they think the piece should be played, or have them attempt to play in a particular way of my choosing. That’s really no different to how I would work with earlier level students, although with Development students we may have more choices like ways of (pardon the pun) developing pieces further. An example off the top of my head would be to see if they could add more to the LH of Moonlight from F9. What notes would they add? How would they fit them in timing-wise? They may be able to do something on the spot or you could just discuss what they might do and have them come up with a version next lesson.
