Jazz Clues Melody

When you teach Jazz Clues, and students have read the melody… do you give them time to “know” the RH melody so they can play without the page before adding LH? Basically, how do you determine student readiness for the LH clue?
Ruth P., North Carolina
I have them get comfortable reading the RH before adding LH, but don’t require memorization. So…they are reading both the RH and the chords from the page.
Huei Chen T., Hawaii
When they are working on the RH they are learning it by generating their own learning tools. Recognizing for pattern, shapes …etc. normally after this process they automatically memorized RH then adding LH would be very easy. I don’t require them to memorize the song but often times it comes naturally that they can play it with out the page.

Here’s the order of assignments I give-
1-LISTEN to the audio, following along with the melody in the music (this helps a lot with the rhythm)
2-LEARN RH melody – maybe just first 4 measures
3-PLAY RH melody with the audio
4-Then add LH
As they go through learning the RH melody, we are constantly looking for PB clues to speed up the learning.
