Just wondering when do triplets get introduced in the curriculum? For some reason I did not see them in RR. Are they mentioned later in context of a specific song?

I believe the first time they appear is in Blues & Improv “hickory” rhythm. But not as a reading exercise, just physical familiarity. Project 7D

Triplets are not discussed in the existing reading materials. I just handle them as we find them in pieces. Perhaps the first chance you might get to discuss them is in the tailpiece of Walk at 11 in Foundation 9. You can show them the score and explain that it has three notes in the space normally occupied by two. You can cross-pollinate to the Hickory rhythm in the Blues and Improv program. There will be further opportunities to explore them in various Development Program pieces.

I’ve had some students see this somewhere, or have bought it up (maybe from a school music query).
If they are too early for Walk at 11 or L7, how else can we handle this query?

I would probably just say it’s too soon to worry about it. If they are particularly confident with everything from Reading Rhythm 1, you could simply show them the measure from Walk at 11, or just write some 1/8 note triplets in their manuscript book, and explain that that’s what Hickory is written like.

A Traveler’s Tale in Time for More Music is in 6/8 time. Students get to see the eighth notes beamed together in groups of 3. Not the same as triplets regarding notation, but the same feel: one beat is divided into 3 equal parts.

Wow, I just noticed that the score of the RH melody arrangement of Amazing Grace also uses triplets! that is in Arr1 already! Funny that I had previously not thought of those as triplets even though they are š
