Internal Motivation

Has anyone heard of school teachers saying children should use their own 'internal motivation' rather than pushing them to do something? We were discussing reward for completing tasks. Poor Mum is confused, I am telling her she needs to guide her children, manage their activities and their long term relationships. The school teacher is telling Mum to let her children explore multiple activities, quit if they don't like it and try something else. [answer author="Gabrielle K.,…

Income Tax

Has anyone discovered any way to (legally!) pay less taxes on piano teaching income? Deduct everything you possibly can. Keep your income in a tax bracket you're more happy to live with. Have a company put you on payroll. Though that last really doesn't work much, because the company still needs to pay that extra tax to have you on payroll, so whether it's self-employment, or employment, or you…

Late Fees

Do you have written in your policies, fees that are late incur extra charges? If so, how much extra do you charge? $20 late fee, no exceptions. My invoice says no places held without payment. I charge $25 if an invoice is more than 5 days overdue. Invoices come out a few days before the end of the month and payment…

Student Absences

I'd love to get feedback on how you handle absences from students who are ill. I offer make-up lessons or even extended lessons to "make up" the time. Also, what about adults or youth who are so involved in other activities that they aren't always able to commit to a lesson/week? Does anyone have a minimum monthly requirement? Just wondered... If students are ill they miss that week, I don't do…

Recording Students

What is the easiest way to record students? Does the voice memo that comes on my iPhone work (i.e. can I save them in files on my computer for when I apply for my certified teacher status) or is there a better way? Is there an app that I can use? (Preferably free?) I believe the voice memo won't work on your phone. It didn't on mine but I have a…

Webinar Series: 07/18/2018 – Piano – Music & the New Case for Creativity

The Introductory Session has always been a successful marketing tool for Simply Music teachers. However, we live in a different world now than when the FIS was first created. We now have the opportunity to share how learning with the Simply Music method can equip students with ‘critical neurological nutrition’ to help them thrive in an unpredictable and ever-changing world. Every Simply Music teacher can benefit by incorporating this dialogue into their lives. Background of FIS Format (00:05) Why a…

Question about Workshops

I would love to grow my studio from the plateau of about 20 students to more like 50. One thing I want to do is add Workshops. I see a 6-minute training on Workshops in Business Support. Where else would you suggest I look? Also, does anyone have experience and advice on Workshops that you would like to share here? How do you advertise it? How do you price it? What do you wish you had…

Anxiety over cost of SHMs

I find myself personally going through "sticker shock" with the cost of Student Home Materials and it's making me feel scared to tell families what they are required to purchase without apologizing for the cost. It's also making me hesitant to include any of the supplemental programs which I purchased myself and want to include, but feel hesitant to ask families to purchase. I'm wondering if any other teachers experienced this and how they overcame it?…

Teacher in a valley

I'm hoping to find some advice and encouragement. For several months, I have felt bogged down in studio management (mostly involving recruiting and keeping students since my finances are very restricted at the moment). In the process of trying to fill vacancies and keep my financial boat afloat, I am losing the joy of teaching and constantly feel drained. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to keep energized and excited about teaching while feeling totally…

Family unwilling to comply with payment method

If you have a new family who doesn't comply to the kind of payment method you specified, would you not take this student? I would rather not. I have lost students over this but if they are unwilling to accept your policies, things tend to be challenging over other things later (like practicing, being on time, etc). Having said that, it does depend on what they don't agree with. I have…
